The Mayor of Orvieto, Stefano Mocio, vicepresident of Cittaslow International opened the proceedings and Roberto Angelucci, president of Cittaslow International, presented an introductory report. Over the day discussions were held between mayors, administrators and technicians from Italy, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Norway, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, South Korea, Sweden and Switzerland. A Cittaslow works towards an individual set of goals which aims to improve the quality of its life: to protect the environment; promote local goods and produce; show consideration for the people who live and work there and visitors alike. Towns and cities wishing to become part of the Cittaslow network need to pass an assessment before being admitted as members. At the plenary session the International Coordination Committee was also elected to govern the association for the next three years. It is composed of a representative of each of the founding cities—Bra, Greve in Chianti, Orvieto and Positano—a Slow Food International representative, eleven representatives from the association and another five from the CittaSlow international network. The Cittaslow program was thought up ten years ago in Orvieto by Paolo Saturnini, former Mayor of Greve in Chianti, Tuscany, and was immediately supported by Carlo Petrini, founder and president of Slow Food International and the mayors of Orvieto, Positano and Bra. Cittaslow is closely linked to the philosophy of Slow Food, with its new approach to agricultural production, environmental welfare and the concept of good, clean and fair living.
